I’ve been a writer for more than 15 years, and I can count on one hand the number of interviews that have ever made me cry… This was one of them.

I was honored to be able to share the story of Lisa Delong, who will race at Kona this weekend, in this IRONMAN article entitled: “In the Lava Fields, Turning Loss into Light.”

Lisa qualified for Kona at 2022 IRONMAN Chattanooga on the anniversary of her daughter’s passing. Carly was only 14 when she passed away from acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

We talked about love, loss, and finding purpose in life, as well as the healing power of a sport like triathlon.

As this strong mother lines up on the beach in Kona, with the sunrise glinting off the waves and the breeze blowing in from the ocean, she knows that Carly will be right there beside her.
